Common Name:   King Snake, Outer Banks NC
Scientific Name:   Lampropeltis getula sticticeps
Morph:
Genetics:

DESCRIPTION
The Outer Banks King snake is found in the barrier islands of the northern coast of North Carolina in Hyde and Dare County's. In build and diet they are very simlar to their mainland cousins, the Eastern King snake. Many people question wether they are a valid subspecies. The main differnce is that the OBX kings are often heavily speckled, but that is not always the case(pictured below). I have seen Easterns from the coastal mainland of Hyde county that are more speckled than an Outer Banks king. Its highly probably that some sticticeps have swam across to the mainland. The other slight difference is that on the average OBX kings lay bigger eggs.
Like most animals species across the globe, these king snakes major threat in the wild is habitat loss. New construction and road kills pay a heavy toll on these snakes.
